Had a run up to Stirling yesterday (Sunday) 55 miles or so from home and on the return journey we tried to get the satnav system to work. My wife plugged in the USB cable and we got the usual message not connecting etc., but as we drove along it suddenly connected and up came the map showing our home after typing in home as our destination. However there was no sound instructions and it kept disconnecting and we suspected that the phone connection terminal . Wife held the phone and pushed the connection and sometimes it came back on. After several attempts she put the phone down in the pocket under the dash with the cable still connected, and it came on again along with the voice directions, and stayed on all the way home. We also wondered about the signal connection as the signal strength when it cut out was week. I had tried it in the past with my old phone and though the phone downloaded AA okay the car would not recognise the phone. It did have the Android Lollipop 5 system and according to Android should have worked. My new phone has a much later version 9, so should work okay. If I had been on my own there would be no way of fiddling about with it as my wife had to do, so I'm not very sure the system is up to scratch. Being retired it not a vital requirement, but it would be nice and useful if it worked properly.
Will try it again on our next longish trip and see what happens. I'm not a techie as far as this type of thing is concerned so it just has to work

Which app? Google Maps, Waze or another third party app?

Most apps require a good data connection for downloading the map data on the move unless you have an app like Sygic which has offline maps for navigation and just needs a solid GPS data connection. Also, the GPS signal can affect your navigation views. Check your GPS signal in the EC menu (Home then move the cursor to the far right button labelled Location) to see if you're getting the right number of GPS satellite connections. I think three is the minimum but the more the better. I'm not a user of Android Auto but CarPlay so can't give any feedback in that regard. oldsalt is an AA user I believe, maybe he can point you in the right direction. I'd check with another USB cable as a matter of course as well to see if the problem lies there.

Just to be clear - the GPS information shown is from the head unit which looks to have GPS tracking capability inbuilt but not implemented in this installation because of the SDA for AA and CarPlay. The sharks fin antenna on the roof has a GPS antenna that feeds the head unit and they have decided to display that information. It is unlikely that they are using that information to drive a transponder setup of some sort to pass this GPS signals to the accessory tray in the console below the unit. Pic from the owners manual for the smart display...

Hi All,
Many thanks for your replies and I will follow up all your suggestions.
I believe, as mentioned, the GPS being used is the phone connection, as that is where the base information is coming from, as zarbs has said.
I will try to download Sygic app or similar, as I am not using any data, which could also be part of the problem. It is an expense which I can do without.
Anyway will see how we get on with it, and thanks again for your kind assistance.

Just one question. If using a downloaded map app on the phone, I assume you would select the USB programme from the head display for the map to come up on the screen and not Android Auto.
Would that be correct.
Thanking you.

Telfer.

You are unable to use any apps excepting those available to Android Auto, the USB port is only for music NOT DATA. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...19hbmRyb2lkX2F1dG9fYWxsEAcYAw==:S:ANO1ljLhcXk

The only Navi apps are Google Maps and or Waze, Sygic WILL NOT WORK!

Waze is the best to use as it gives warning notifications re cameras, heavy traffic etc. Input of police presence, traffic conditions etc are inputted by other Waze users as they drive.

The downside is you need data from your phone.

This forum has people who have been trying to hack Android Auto, they have achieved a few things, however, google keep changing their code locking them out. https://forum.xda-developers.com/android-auto/android-auto-general

Eventually the Chinese will build a replacement headunit, at least I'm hopeful they will.

Sygic on iPhone iOS supports CarPlay. On AA I am unsure though their website says it works with Skoda (SmartLink) which I used last month in Europe and it worked but AA is an unknown. oldsalt has noted it doesn't work so he must have tested it. Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, I already owned the Sygic app and unfortunately Google don't own it thus we must use what Google own google maps or Waze which Google didn't develop but bought from an Israeli company.

That's a real shame as it works well on CarPlay. I was in Bratislava, where the Sygic developers are, and found the information locally available there really made the app shine. Pity they same level of info isn't available everywhere but then they have first hand knowledge and their database servers would be the most up to date. In the countries we visited they hide their speed cameras but Sygic was up to date with the current locations in most cases. If it wasn't I suppose I'll find out in due course.

Thanks for all the interest shown and I will let you know how things work out.
As said, being retired its not a high priority, but I would like it to work well. However it does not seem to be as straight forward as the DVD system I had in the old S-Type Jaguar.
I'll treat it as a new challenge to be resolved in due course.
Thanks again for your interest and assistance.

Problems with Samsung Phone

My Samsung Galaxy S10 pairs with no problem through Android Auto with my Eclipse but my wife's Samsung A10 won't, even though it's loaded Android Auto ok.

Has anyone else managed to get an A10 working with the Mitsubishi Eclipse ? I'm sure it's listed as compatible !

My Samsung S8 sometimes works okay, but I don't bother with it, as it is too much of a hassle and can't be bothered with it. At my time of life there are more important things to be doing than messing around with complicated modern technology, that is too much trouble than its worth.
Haha, that sounds a bit grumpy, but its what I think.
Doesn't put me off my Eclipse Cross though, as it is running as sweet as a nut.
They need to make it compatible with the likes of Tom Tom or similar SatNavs, so the image is transferred onto the cars lager screen by wifi method, instead of messing about with cables etc.

See they are saying its 10 59am where it is actually 5pm here in the UK.
A nice sunny day here in Scotland for a change, but not all that warm at 15*C, South of England are at 25*C today or thereby.

Are we talking about Bluetooth pairing or using Android Auto with the cable?

With the cable. I've tried two or three just in case !
The A10 originally shipped with Android 8 (oreo) I don't think Android Auto was fully supported until Android 9 (Pie). The good news is that the A10 can be upgraded to 9. If your wife already upgraded to Pie, then you might try connecting it to a different vehicle first.

Right, I'll check what version Android it is and if it the early one I'll look into updating, Thanks !!
