My first recommendation is don't trust the estimates shown on the dash until you get a good idea of your actual mileage. What's displayed could easily be skewed by current readings. In your example, you pull up to the pump after driving for an hour and averaging 32 mpg. When you fill the tank, the ecu reads volume at listed capacity which is 15.5 gal (U.S.). So if you continue to get 32 mpg then you can drive 496 miles until empty, or ostensibly 500 miles. I do believe filling the tank resets the mileage calculations. Then you drive home through town and average 22 mpg with traffic. Now that same 15.5 gallons will only get you 341 miles until empty, if you stay with city driving.
Do you know what your actual average mileage is based on actual miles driven/gallons to full?
