Manual gearbox faults

Hi has anyone experienced the same problems I have with a manual gearbox?
I brought my Eclipse Cross 4 at 9 months old with 3900 miles on the clock, when selecting 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 2nd gear it would sometimes crunch into gear even with the clutch pedal fully depressed.
I complained to the dealer who agreed the gearbox had a problem, so the car went in for a gearbox replacement.
I was given another Eclipse Cross 4 to use which had a similar problem though not as dramatic.
My gearbox was replaced with a new gearbox from Mitsubishi, now sometimes it takes all your strength to select 2nd gear although it no longer crunches into gear.
I have Mitsubishi Technical now interested in testing the car as I feel there is an underlying design defect with these gearboxes.....

Not having any problem as such, though second gear can be a little reluctant to engage when the car is started from cold, but once warmed up is quite acceptable.
Second gear cannot be hurried, but otherwise find the gearbox selection very good. I'm not a fan of automatics and like to control the gear selection, thus having a manual box.

Hi
I’ve the same problem with my gearbox which I’m being told is a characteristic of the vehicle ?
Bet they wouldn’t put that in the brochure
Anyway I’m interested to find out if there has been any take up in Mitsubishi Technical having a look at the problem
I think they’re just going to keep the it’s not a fault it’s a characteristic going if people accept it
My car was in for its service recently and I mentioned that when starting from cold, sometimes second gear was a bit difficult to select. Said they would look at it and see if the selection cables were okay and if any lubrication was required. They said no fault was found on the road test, but appreciated that the car was warm at the time. However I have found that the gear is easier to engage when cold since the service was done, so some small adjustment must have been done. Or, as the mileage increases, the newness wears off, curing the problem.
I asked about adjustment or bleeding clutch as suggested in another post
And was just told that they know nothing about it and followed the line of a characteristic
I think the bleeding of the clutch hydraulics could be well worth while. At least ensures there is no problem arising from the clutch not fully disengaging, causing a drag/ pre load on the gear selection mechanism. Give it a try, and see if there is an improvement. Following my recent service, I notice a definite improvement in 2nd gear selection, but still not a gear that can be hurried too much.
Asked the workshop manager after seeing your previous post about this but he said it would make no difference
Hi all
Finally managed to get someone to agree that there is a fault with the gearbox
After 3 failed attempts to get someone to check or take me seriously it’s gone into the garage for a 3 day visit for a check up ( service was 2 weeks ago with no faults found )
This morning I had phone call stating they found a fault !!!
The technical department at Mitsubishi have suggested that a better much more expensive oil needs to be used?
The technician has said it’s already made a massive improvement to the gear selection?
So will update once it’s been tested tomorrow morning

Bet you can’t guess ?
Yes not much difference!
but will get in touch with them again and see what happens

That's a shame Kevg. Had hoped the oil change would have helped. Must say though, the improvement with the selection of my second gear after the service in May this year has remained, with no further problems being experienced.
It might be worth while to give the new oil a chance to settle in a bit longer, and see if it helps the gears to bed in with more usage.
Keep us update as and when you have more news.
The dealership have said it’s cured the fault but I think the damage has already been done as all the other gears are easy and quiet to change into
First is still a bit stiff and grinds
Second makes a real clunk when changing gear both up into and down as well
I can feel the gear selection grind as it lines up
I'm wondering if the clutch is fully retracting when you operate the clutch pedal. Maybe worth checking this out again with the dealer. Apart from the gear lever baulking the very odd time, when I engage 1st gear, it usually slips in with no bother at all. Your 1st gear grinding on selection suggests the clutch is not clearing sufficiently to allow clean selection of the gears.
There is a recent post on here somewhere, dealing with this problem, where a new, and I think modified clutch assembly, was fitted and cured the gear selection problem the owner had.
Will try and find it and see if that can help.
I'm sure it was somebody in Germany made the comment about the modified clutch assembly being available, to help someone in the UK to overcome this fault.
Yes it seems like the synchromesh of first and second gears isn’t working right causing the hard selection and grinding noise
As the dealership have already assured me that the gearbox has been checked I would have thought they would have noticed the oil which they said was very thin ?
contacting them soon to let them know that their remedy hasn’t worked

Some gear oils nowadays can be quite thin, than in days of old.
Interesting to know what the new oil specification is for future reference.
Not found the post re the clutch problem as yet, not had time to look, but will do.
Many thanks for that if it can shed any light on how other people are getting the problem sorted
Have just chatted with the service manager who agrees my car has had a problem but now it’s a characteristic again
His recommendation is that it’s not the car for me 🤦‍♂️
bit late when I would lose loads of money if I wanted to get something else
But apart from the gears we love it
"I've been trying to sort this issue out on my gearbox for months now and i think ive sorted it. The first thing i tryed was to upgrade the gearbox oil to Red Line MTL 75W80 GL-4, it made very little difference but its a good place to start. The second was to add an additive called Mollyslip to the gearbox, i had read somewhere that mitsubishi had used this on the evos years ago when they had issues with the gearboxs so gave it a go. A slightly better shift from 1st to 2nd but sometimes still getting a crunch so the issue was still there. I then noticed that if you pump the clutch twice before changing gear it wouldnt crunch, which would indicate air in the fluid so decided to bleed the clutch tonight and it feels much better now. I will know for sure when i take it a drive tomorrow but i'm pretty confident."
"His following post confirmed the improvement and indeed corrected the issue."

Hope this may help Kavg. Still looking for the German clutch reference one. Copied the above from another series of posts, which could be the answer to your gear selection problem. The last sentence is mine, where he confirms the improvement.

Here is another post concerning a stall problem, sometimes experienced with manual gearbox cars. There was a re-write software for the throttle control unit to cure this, which I had done to my car when in for its last service in May this year. You will note the post also make reference to a new modified clutch cover being fitted.

"I collected my car from dealer few days ago and it drives like a different car. Apparently the dealer fitted a modified clutch cover under warranty. before it went in it was stalling at times and you could feel each gear when changing up, now gear changes are smoother and i haven't stalled it yet so much more confident when pulling across traffic."

Thanks for all the info I’m phoning customer care on Monday and hitting them with all the info so will let you know what the out come is ?
are you actually in the trade as you seem to be more clued up than the second vice department I’m dealing with lol
