Hi everyone!
I have a 2019 eclipse cross which has started making the most peculiar noise. It doesn't matter if I am driving or stationary and it happens at random times, but it sounds like a windscreen wiper rubbing on dry glass, lasts about 1-2 seconds and seems to come from the rear (although I cannot be sure!).
Anyone else experience/know what this is?!
Thanks :)

Other than the obvious rear wiper, there's very little in the back that can make a noise like that. Have you actually checked to make sure the rear wiper is off? The only other mechanical things in the rear would be the fuel pump, the drive train and the brakes. The fuel pump would whine or grind. The brakes would squeak or make a rubbing noise, but only if the car were moving. The drive train, too would have to be moving.

Could it simply be the seat rubbing the console? It is a quite annoying sound and others have complained about it.

Thank you so much for coming back to me Lunatic59! I wish it was the windscreen wiper but definitely off when the noise presents. It doesn't sound like a whining or grinding noise, or squeaking, so hopefully it is not any of the mechanical things you have mentioned. Also not the seat rubbing the console, it is all very strange! I recently had the car serviced and the only thing I can think of trailing next is driving without a/c or heating on to see if noise stops then. I love this car but with all the safety recalls and now this, it doesn't install huge confidence in keeping it!
Thanks again :)

The fact that you hear the noise at times when you are standing still makes it quite curious. Are you certain it's coming from the rear? Must the engine be running for the noise to occur?

I have a 2019 model as well and as far as I can see there have been no recalls for the EC in the US.

It is curious isn't it! The engine definitely has to be running for the noise to happen and I have been trailing driving with the heating/ac on and off and it happens even when off, so can rule that out. To me it definitely sounds like it is coming from the rear but because it doesn't happen all the time and lasts a couple seconds, it is so hard to locate. Most peculiar!!!

I've found a few other threads where people complain of odd noises and it turned out to be the fuel pump. See if this sounds like what you're describing.

Can you only hear it when idle, or does it occur when driving?

If it only happens once in a while it may be the GDI injectors dumping their fuel pressure. When the system reaches near its high pressure limit, the fuel pressure must be released. The system does not have a pressure release system so it is injected into the engine. If the car is idling when this happens you will hear a buzzing or ticking for around a second. Normally it occurs when driving, but can happen at idle.

Just a possible explanation without hearing it
